4 Top Athletes Who Use CBD
From MMA to the NFL and down to everyday Joe Soaps, more than ever athletes are turning to CBD and other alternative medicines to help treat the myriad of things that can affect them. When it comes to faster recovery times and reduced inflammation, CBD has been shown to be a go-to treatment.
Today were looking at four athletes who have been more than a little vocal about their support for continued research into CBD and the positive effect it can have on our lives. These are some of the best in the world in their respective fields, suffering injury after injury, and they also think CBD is great. That not a coincidence. Read on to find out more.
Nate Diaz
One of the biggest names in MMA, Nate Diaz showed his full colours following his loss at UFC 202. At the post-fight press conference, Diaz appeared to be using a vape pen. When questioned about what it was he said CBD. “It helps with the healing process and inflammation and stuff like that,â€. Nate and his older brother Nick are no strangers to the controversy surrounding marijuana and CBD. In 2015, Nick received a five-year suspension after testing positive for marijuana metabolites at UFC 183.

While the Diaz brothers may not be the first athletes to be vocal proponents of CBD they are definitely the most brazen. Using CBD has been shown to be effective as both a painkiller and an inflammatory. In some cases even more so than more mainstream medicines. Little wonder then and quite telling that athletes exposing themselves to some of the most intense and brutal injuries would seek out CBD. Not only are the Diaz brothers MMA fighters though, they also regularly participate in triathlons. As Nick says, “Itll make your life a better place. CBD. CBD oil.â€
Derrick Morgan
An NFL star who has come out with support for CBD and the benefits it can have for everyone health is Derrick Morgan. Although he has never been diagnosed with a concussion Morgan has become increasingly interested in the non-psychoactive element of marijuana, CBD. He has donated a lot of money towards research in the field because he believes it may be the very thing to protect players brains from suffering catastrophic conditions following their NFL careers.
Morgan has done a lot of work as well towards lobbying the NFL to begin sponsoring research into the benefits of CBD. As he has pointed out, the NFL is currently sponsored by alcohol and beer companies, two substances that offer no health benefits to its players. With the huge power behind the NFL, it would be a huge boon to the CBD industry if it were to get that kind of backing. It would go a helluva long way towards changing public opinion towards CBD.
Eugene Monroe
In recent years we are learning more and more about the dangers of brain injuries and in particular Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). This is a neurodegenerative disease brought about through repeated blows to the head. Everyone from boxers to rugby players, to football players could be at risk from this terrible affliction. Eugene Monroe, a former tackle for the Baltimore Ravens, believes that CBD could be the deciding factor in changing the lives of football players exposed to these injuries.
Having played at the highest level, he seen firsthand how detrimental it can be to have players resorting to harmful and addictive opioids in order to deal with their pains. He even believes that THC, the psychoactive element, can be helpful for players trying to sleep at night. Many resort to Ambien and other sleeping pills and relaxants which have a high rate of addiction as their disposition towards them becomes stronger and stronger.
Bas Rutten
Former UFC heavyweight champion Ras Rutten is a UFC Hall of Famer, a three-time King of Pancrase and a man who finished his career on a 22-fight winning streak. The Dutch mixed martial artist really knows a thing or two about pain. So not surprisingly, Bas Rutten is also a big-time supporter of CBD. He also wrote an article about Mark Kerr, another famous MMA fighter who suffered from an addiction to opioids. This something Rutten has also struggled with and hopes that in the future other MMA stars dont have to deal with.
Like the NFL players, the need to quell pain is a constant one. Because of this many athletes will end up abusing their medications as they grow a greater and greater immunity to their painkilling effects. Bas, and others like him, are of the opinion that fighters should use CBD to help relieve their aches. Not only is non-addictive and non-psychoactive, and wont leave users fuzzy post use. This is great for fighters who need to keep a clear head.
